With the newest social media trend being Twitter, a lot of established as well as independent artist have taken to the networking site as a way to increase awareness of their brands and movements. Although the site boast music friendly opportunities i.e. New Music Monday’s, a lot of users are starting to complain about the onslaught of music they are either tweeted or fill their timeline. Rightfully so, if your a DJ, radio personality, or have anything to do with the entertainment industry you have to expect these tweets to fill your timeline from time to time So, I have decided to come up with a couple quick do’s and dont’s for independent artists that can help further as well as build their relationships on twitter without being blocked ignored, or unfollowed.
1. Do be considerate in your approach.
Just like how you have to be careful in how you approach someone on the street, you also have to be considerate in the way you come across on twitter. I think a lot of people feel as though they can act any way the want because they are not in front of that person or because its through the internet. What most Read the rest of this entry »
We’re living in an age dominated by social networks. Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter are populated with artists, business owners, and casual users who are just screaming for attention. It’s normal to see status updates like…”I’m about to walk my dog.” “Damn this hamburger is good!” or “I’m on my way to the gym!” These are people who make it a point to Read the rest of this entry »
Fanpush is a cool marketing tool that uses Twiiter to help independent artists get their music out. Fanpush is in beta right now and more features are promised to come in the near future. Check out the video and try it out for yourself.
The concept for Tweet For A Track is pretty frickin’ dope. It’s a free online tool that encourages your Twitter followers to spread download links to your music. The site allows you to tweet a free download link of your music to your Twitter followers. They can only download the music if they repost the link. Their followers must do the same if they wish to download it. …and so on…and so on. This can create great potential for your music to spread rapidly.
There are a lot of independent hip hop artists on Twitter that are wasting their time by using it ineffectively to promote and market themselves. Twitter is a great tool if used correctly, but it can be totally useless if not. Here are 5 Twitter marketing habits you should avoid.
1. Sending me an @ reply with only a link to your music. If I don’t know you and you didn’t take the time to introduce yourself, I’m not going to waste my time clicking on your link. It’s spam and it’s annoying.
2. Letting 3rd party sites use your account so send out automated tweets. Twitter users sign up to some 3rd party sites that help them increase their number of followers. These sites then send out tweets promoting their site through the user’s account. Disable that shit! It annoying when a dozen twitter users have the same promotional message being tweeted out. Don’t let companies spam through your account. Read the rest of this entry »
Ritchcraft, Qwest, and Jansport J., met over Twitter and discovered that they all made remixes. They decided to mesh those remixes into an album. The album is a collection of remixes of some new and old hip hop gems. They named the album “Frootloops” because they all Read the rest of this entry »
If you’re an artist and you’re not using Twitter by now, your grind is in need of a serious upgrade. Twitter provides some great opportunities to connect with others in the music industry or it can just be used as a way to update fans of your music.
There are a lot of apps and tools that make the Twitter experience nice and fun. Here are 8 of my favorites.
1. TweetDeck is the best desktop Twitter app I’ve come across, with Twirl running a close second. Too many dope features to name here. If you’re new to Twitter, it can be a bit confusing. TweetDeck makes the learning process a lot smoother.
If you’re not a Twitter user yet, you’re missing out on what could be a very effective promotional tool for you and your music. Twitter is a mini-blogging service that allows you to send short messages to other users in real-time. It is similar to the way you’d send text from a cell phone but Twitter makes room for a lot more possibilities. It make take some time to get used to if you’re totally unfamiliar with it, but jump right in and try it. Soon you may find yourself unable to stop using it. The Twitter community is large and growing very quickly and creates great opportunities to network. Here are 5 good uses for it:
1. Meet DJs: You can use twitter to meet DJs from all over the world who support independent artists. Some of them have their own radio shows on and offline.
2. Mobilize your fanbase: You can localize your networks and alert your fans instantly about performances or appearances just by twittering from a cell phone.
3. Get Press: Connect with hip hop magazine editors, writers or bloggers and introduce them to your music. It’s very possible that they may be interested in doing an article on you.
4. Collaborations: Collab with other artists or producers who also have their own followers on twitter. This can effectively broaden your fan base by plugging you into their networks as well.
5:Unforeseen Opportunities: A lot of the time, twitter users send “tweets” looking for a service you may be able to provide. You can receive these in real-time or search past messages for keywords of your interests.
You can find me on twitter at twitter.com/indiehiphop . I’ll write some future posts about other services and applications that greatly increase Twitter’s usefulness.
