In this video clip, Whitney Broussard, an entertainment lawyer, talks about the importance of knowing when you need a manager. He also talks about knowing when you’ve reached the limit for doing everything thing yourself, and knowing when to get help.
I’ve talked about the role of music managers in a previous article that you can read here.

Good one, but I’m a little on the fence about doing everything yourself until you get big enough to pay someone. In the business world, if you have a good enough vision, you can certainly find someone that believes in what you’re doing like you do that will work either for equity or a revenue share. While a manager is unhappy with “20% of nothing” two people working to turn nothing into something is usually more effective than only one, and I say that from experience.
Of course, it is important to make sure you have the right people on your team, otherwise it will be highly ineffective, which is another problem to deal with. I’ve had that experience as well.
What I have learned is that when I have a good team, they bring diverse ideas to the table which improves the whole. My team right now consistently drives us forward and without them, we wouldn’t be where we are.
Just a thought. Now that certainly doens’t mean spend more time looking fora team, focus on the primary aspect of your business, i.e. as an artist that’s making music, but be on the look out for people who can make you better and avoid those who can’t.
