This very sad but true commentary on why females are M.I.A. in hip hop, should make all of us who claim to love the music and culture take a look at themselves. The absence of women in hip hop is the big ugly elephant in the room that few want to talk about. It’s really a scary sign that the culture is not moving forward. In fact, women are playing less of a role than they did just 10 years ago. Some say that they’re not good enough to compete with their male counterparts. Of course this is not only point to obvious double standaard, but it’s equally ridiculous.
Sure hip hop can be degrading to women and misogynistic . I also believe that this is reflective of society as a whole. But, even the porn business has women who are running companies, distributing and producing their own products. This is a problem in hip hop that needs to be fixed. Women have something to say and we need to listen. Their absence could be one of the reasons why hip hop started going sour. Think about it!

My sentiments exactly. I’m a female Emcee myself, a poet, and a novice but aspiring producer. I’ve been writing for 14+ years, and I’m of the conscious old school Hip Hop variety…which there isn’t much of that variety nowadays with everyone desperately trying to mock or emulate the Barbie Nikki Manaj image it’s quite sick, the state of female Hip Hop and mainstream Hip Hop in general. Now while I’ll admit to my indifference to being marketable, or “making it” in the industry, I must argue that I have PLENTY to say, and A LOT of what todays females and youths need to be fed…that good movement music. I’m a party to the hip hop that inspired and forged revolutions, and if we are ever more in need of just that, of revolution, it’s right now. You should peep my movement if your ready for an oldskool female emcee who kicks science.
