Whether you are a rapper, singer, or musician, the goal for most independent and unsigned artists is to get a record deal. No matter what genre of music you’re in, the requirements for getting signed to a record label are pretty much the same. Now, in the age of digital music and the Internet, an artists mud have a significant buzz to get the attention on the major record labels. What is an artist buzz? Well, it means that you already have significant number of loyal fans who already believe in you and your music.

This is the stumbling block for most artists. They want to know, “How do I attract fans to my music?” Well for most artists and musicians, it’s always best to start local. If you can start with just your circle of friends and their associates, and get them to support and believe in your music career, you’ll have the beginnings of a following.

From there, if your music is truly good enough, you can start reaching out to the local DJs in your city. If you have a hot song, they’ll play at the clubs and maybe even put it on their mixtapes.

The more ears you get to your music increases the potential to gain new and loyal fans. Hip Hop artists accomplish this by putting out mixtapes regularly. Once you have a sizable following, you can start making some money by doing shows and selling merchandise.

While all this is happening, it’s important to use social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even Youtube as a way to stay connected with your new and growing fan base. When your popularity on these platforms start to grow, the DJs continue the support, and the music blogs start talking about you music, the record labels start taking notice.

There have been rappers who have been sought after by record labels after releasing just one mixtape! There are singers who have been discovered from their popularity on YouTube. These days, it’s hard to get a record deal unless you have done some of these things before hand.

Almost every unsigned artist wants to get signed to a label but it’s always best to read books or search the Internet to get the most knowledge you can about the business while trying to pursue your goals.
