Artists: Bloggers Hate Wack Photos!

Your image is just at important as your music. Especially in hip hop. Most people will try to determine what kind of music you make just from a glance of your pic. This is why you should give serious thought about the promotional pictures you send out with your music.

You can’t imagine some of the horrible pics artists send me to post on this blog. The above pic is a recreation, but a very mild example.  I get bad mobile phone pics in the bathroom, with their children, with their girlfriends, got one in the kitchen, driving in the car….you get my point. Blog and website owners put a lot into making sure their sites are visually appealing. Well, at least most of them do. And they don’t wont crappy pics detracting from that.

If the music is really good, I’ll take the time of asking an artist for another pic, but I know people in the industry who won’t even listen to your music if the the promo pic looks terrible. This is a blog for independent hip hop artists so I understand that not everyone has the budget to hire a professional photographer for a photo shoot , but it doesn’t take much to get a photo taken with a digital camera with decent resolution.  Take your music career seriously. If this is your hobby, cool.  Just don’t expect anything great to come of it if you don’t take the necessary steps to be the best you can be.

Garbage in…garbage out.

  1. You’d think artist would pay more attention to details like this but they don’t. Its not hard to get a photoshoot for a decent price. A lot of times artist think its just about the music. While the music is the big factor, its the small stuff like photos that makes people want to listen.

    Great post.

  5. Amen to this post. It’s the main reason why I stopped designing covers for artists who wanted to use real photos – and even more so for artists who wanted me to illustrate them. Digital cameras are everywhere and every third person has a great one these days. If you can’t get a good photo in 2010, you’re either lazy or closed-minded to what people will think of you… which translates to me as “you don’t give a f@ck” so why should I?

We could take this post even further and say, “bloggers hate wack covers”. The same rules apply but the spectrum broadens becuz, you don’t have to be limited to a photo for cover art. 10-years ago I would’ve said it’s hard to find an affordable designer. In 2010 they’re all over the place and tons of em are doing shit for free, just becuz they have Photoshop & Illustrator on their computers. There’s NO reason why we should see so many wack covers in this day and age.
