Wendy Day is an advocate for indie hip hop artists and has prevented a large number of artists from getting screwed by negotiating their deals. Google her. I had the pleasure of interviewing her a short time ago when she first released her current book.

In this short video clip, Wendy explains that not all deals are bad when you’re educated about music business. But more importantly, she goes on the explain why hip hop artist these days are better off staying independent.

Do yourself a solid and follow her on Twitter @RapCoalition. Wendy is also on our “must follow” list in our Indie Hip Hop Directory, which should already be one of the tools in your grind right now . Read the rest of this entry »

How They Came Up: The Machine Gun Kelly Story

If you’re an artist and you’re trying to get to a place where people are paying money to see you perform where ever you go, let’s face it, you have to give them something worth paying for. A rapper can tweet all day about being in the studio recording his album but at the end of the day, if there is a lack of fans to buy your record, then being in the studio means nothing; because after all, that’s who you are making your music for. What does this have to do with Machine Gun Kelly? It has everything to do with him because Machine Gun Kelly, also known as MGK, is a great example of knowing how to put on a good show can be the difference between followers and fans. Besides his incredible lyrics, you won’t see him standing there with his crew behind him rapping. He connects with his fans. So much so that he can trust them enough to hold him up when he dives off the stage or when they tattoo his motto ‘Lace Up’ on themselves, he gets the same tattoo also. INDIE REVIEW: Madlib & Freddie Gibbs -”Thuggin’” EP

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

Thuggin’ EP

Stones Throw Records

5/5 Stars

From the very first time the Thuggin’ EP project was mentioned to me until the moment I finished listening to the whole thing, the concept of a ‘perfect balance’ echoed through my mind over and over. In so many ways does this EP make sense of a what I’d call a ‘Hip Hop equilibrium’. Stones Throw’s staple-producer Madlib & Freddie Gibbs create a harmonious duality in which a legend meets a talented initiate, West Coast meets Midwest (Gibbs hails from Gary, IN), and instrumental tracks shake hands with some solid lyrics.

Stones Throw Records released this EP last November, but I’ve been waiting to lend my excitement to Read the rest of this entry »

8 Common Mistakes Artists Make When Submitting Music [excerpt]

This is an excerpt from our e-book Online Grind, Hip Hop Directory

Some artists will never know why they aren’t getting their music submissions accepted, or why they never receive a reply. A large percentage of them make some very avoidable mistakes. After running a blog for over 3 years, these seem to be the most common…

1. Bad Subject Headings:

Artists, when sending music via email, often put very bad titles into the subject heading of their messages. If you haven’t established a personal relationship with the recipient, a simple subject heading like “music submission” is usually enough to tell the receiver what the nature of the email is.

Subject headings like. “CHECK THIS OUT!!” or “NEW RELEASE” mean nothing to a recipient who doesn’t know who you are.

2. Social Media Stalking: Read the rest of this entry »
